Service is essential to living life with purpose and creating connections with others to bring about a greater good -- here's how I've been able to do that during my time at the University of Mary!
PERU MISSION TRIPDuring the 2018 Peru Mission Trip, I was able to act as a translator in various situations, help build a pig pen, and lead a march for life. This service allowed others to be able to communicate, which is something of great value to me. I was also able to interact with a number of youth and teach them a few English words! Having this opportunity to encounter others in their native language of Spanish was an experience that gave me a deep appreciation for those who are able to serve others using their talents and gifts!

Day of Service
Every Fall Semester, I look forward to entering our Bismarck-Mandan community to extend a helping hand.
For the 2017 Day of Service, I wiped down pews at Corpus Christi church in Bismarck. This simple act led me to think about the hundreds of lives that sit in those pews every weekend and what kind of hardships those people may be experiencing in their daily lives.
For the 2018 Day of Service, I helped in doing deep cleaning tasks at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit. This helped me to see the grandeur of a faith community and how it works to serve the people of western North Dakota through the Diocese of Bismarck.

ELA Service Project
For our service project, we chose to collaborate with St. Bernard's Mission School on the Fort Yates Reservation. This school serves the locals with a quality education focused on equipping the students with the tools to succeed. We have established the basic parameters of our collaboration work with St. Bernard's and are working towards a long-term service commitment between St. Bernard's and the SEBS ELA at the University of Mary.
Religious Education
For the 2018-2019 school year, I was able to serve the people of the Parish of Saint Anne's as a 6th grade religious education teacher. This experience allowed me to teach young students while also having the opportunity to learn right alongside them about the changes that they were experiencing while attending school. This hands-on experience enriched me in a number of ways and I am grateful for the opportunity. Overall, the students that I taught were better able to understand the Catholic faith in relation to being a young person in a world that does not offer itself to easily maintaining a life of holiness.
